PC-10 A Practical Theological and Pastoral Framework for Working with Couples (Two-part seminar)
June 24 from 9:00am — 4:30pm
The Art of Walking with Couples toward the Truth of Marriage, Sex, and Family - Joseph Michalak, MAT
John Paul II spoke of a pastoral “law of gradualness” in moving toward the truth, which, being true, cannot allow for a “gradualness of the law.” The truly pastoral is not divorced from true doctrine. So what is the real connection? How do we bring the pastoral and the doctrinal together? We will consider the art—and it is indeed an art—rooted in that archaic-sounding virtue called prudence that enables us gradually to embrace the true and the best without compromise. This art applies whether we are working in marriage preparation, in marriage counseling or mentoring, in crisis management, in NFP instruction or the like. We will consider real-life examples.
Working With Marriages in Marriage-Unfriendly Culture - John R. Buri, Ph.D.
As with any artisan, it is one thing to know how to use the tools of one’s trade, but it is another to have a framework within which those tools can be used to achieve a desired result. As artisans of marriage, how can we help couples to develop a framework within which they can use couples’ skills to the benefit of their marriages? This will be the focus of the seminar. While we will discuss some tools that can be used by couples, the primary emphasis will be on the development of a framework within which couples can begin to build stronger marriages within a culture that is tearing them apart.
